Privacy, Regulations, and Trust: What you need to make your
technology successful.

The implications of privacy have already had a major impact
on companies such as Phorm and NebuAd in recent service provider
trials. While there is a great amount of extremely sophisticated
technology that can be applied to the problem of correlation of user
data to provide services for web applications, it is necessary to take
a moment to look at the implications of that technology and the
external forces which can impede deployment and acceptance of that
technology.
There are three basic factors to consider here: privacy, regulations,
and trust. As can be seen with Facebook Beacon, users have a certain
expectation of privacy which once broken can irreversibly damage the
reputation of the technology. As can be seen with the reactions to
Phorm, governments can step in with regulations which may
fundamentally affect how the technology needs to be implemented, but
may also result in a patchwork of implementations for different
countries. Lastly these services and applications need to be able to
walk the fine line of having enough rich data to create a competitive
advantage while allowing the user to be comfortable with what is known
about them.
