THE GEOSPATIAL WEB - A STATE OF THE ART REPORT
by Michael F Goodchild, Director of Spatial Studies,
Department of Geography, University of California, Santa Barbara
The geospatial web is conceived as an integration of sensors, servers,
and users sharing geospatial data that is often dynamic and near
real-time, and fully interoperable. I review the current state of this
art from several perspectives: sensors that may be fixed or mobile and
may engage with human intelligence; positioning technologies; four
dimensions of geospatial interoperability; search mechanisms that rely
on geospatial metadata; and applications that range from thin-client
browsers to thick-client GIS. I propose a research agenda to fill
significant gaps in the current state of the art.
