Semantic Business Process Management

Instructors: Carlos Pedrinaci and Michal Zaremba

The proposed tutorial explains and demonstrates how the combination of Business Process Management (BPM) and Semantic Web Services (SWS) can eliminate the deficiencies that current BPM technology exhibits. The tutorial will present the state of the art in both areas (business process management and process execution, the SOA concept in BPM, the SWS approach and frameworks, etc.), motivate the need for explicit use of semantics to overcome the current challenges in BPM, and present a consolidated technical framework that integrates SWS into BPM technology. The tutorial will be held by BPM and SWS experts that actively work on integration of both technologies in the EU-funded SUPER project.

Short Bios:

Dr. Carlos Pedrinaci is a research fellow of the Knowledge Media Institute at the Open University. Dr Pedrinaci holds an MSc in computer science and a PhD in artificial intelligence from the University of the Basque Country (Spain). He has been involved in several European research projects, namely OBELIX, DIP, SUPER and SOA4All, working on Semantic Web Services, and the enhancement of eBusiness and Business Process Management technologies with semantics. Dr Pedrinaci is actively involved in the standardization of Semantic Web Services technologies. In particular he is a member of the W3C SAWSDL Working Group, the OASIS Semantic Execution Environment Technical Committee, the WSMO Working Group and the Conceptual Models for Services Working Group. His research interests include Semantic Web Services, Business Process Management and Knowledge-Based Systems.

Dr. Michal Zaremba works as a senior researcher for Semantic Technology Institute (STI) at the University of Innsbruck. He leads Semantic Execution Environment unit and drives research on the architecture capable to handle Semantic Web Services usage process. Michal Zaremba holds a Ph.D. degree in industrial engineering at the National University of Ireland and M.Sc. degree in computer science and management at the Wroclaw University of Technology in Poland. He has been involved over the last couple of years in several research projects at the European level focusing on various aspects related to Semantic Web Services. These projects include: SOA4ALL, Sembiz, SUPER, DIP, Knowledge Web, SWWS, Moment and Smartisan. Michal Zaremba has been a contributor to the WSMO and WSMX working groups; chair of OASIS Semantic Execution Environment Technical Committee (SEE TC) and co-chair of Conceptual Models for Services Working Group (CMS WG). He is also a founder of a spin-off company seekda, which enables keyword based discovery of public Web Services. His research interests include Semantic Web Services, eBusiness, Enterprise Application Integration, B2B Integration as well as Business Process Management.
