Inductive Logic Programming for the Semantic Web

The Semantic Web is an evolving extension of the World Wide Web in which the semantics of information and services on the web is defined, making it possible for the web to understand and satisfy the requests of people and machines to use the web content. It derives from W3C director Tim Berners-Lee's vision of the Web as a universal medium for data, information, and knowledge exchange. Formal ontologies play a key role in the architecture of the Semantic Web. To this aim ad-hoc mark-up languages have been proposed that are based on Description Logics (DLs). Yet building ontologies as well as rules on top of ontologies is a very demanding task that can be (partially) automated by applying algorithms for inductive inference. The tutorial will highlight the potential of Inductive Logic Programming (ILP) as a source of solutions to the Knowledge Acquisition bottleneck problem of the Semantic Web.

Short Bios:
Francesca A. Lisi, PhD holder in Computer Science (curriculum of Artificial Intelligence), is currently an Assistant Professor at the Dept. of Computer Science of the University of Bari (Italy). Active in the field of Inductive Logic Programming (ILP) for 10 years and PC member of the ILP conference since 2004, she is currently working on frameworks for inductive inference that adopt the ILP methodological apparatus and the Knowledge Representation and Reasoning means offered by hybrid systems integrating Description Logics and Horn clausal logic. Besides studying the theoretical aspects of these frameworks,
she is also investigating their applicability in novel application contexts like the ones offered by the upcoming Semantic Web. With reference to this research, Francesca A. Lisi has given several seminars and tutorials and has been awarded with the 2006 Cyc Prize for the best research proposal. She is (co-)author of about 50 scientific articles published in journals and peer-reviewed conference proceedings and serves as PC member for international conferences like the "European Semantic Web Conference (ESWC)". She teaches BSc courses on Databases, Computer Networks and Web Programming. She is tutoring BSc and MSc theses on Semantic Web Mining.
